The commune is at the heart of the Grande Champagne region on the banks of the river Collinaud.
Lignières took its name from the local Linen industry and belonged to the Archiac family up to the 15th Century when it was taken over by the Poussards.
The hamlet of Sonneville, situated to the North of the commune, was once the principle village of a totally separate parish which has since been joined to Lignières thereby creating the commune of Lignières-Sonneville.
The church of Notre Dame dates from the 12th and 13th Centuries and the commune also boasts the two chapels of Sonneville and Saint Palais as well as a castle dating from the 17th Century which is a listed building due to the marvellous exterior.
The moated grounds are open to the public.
The Little Linen House is an historical reconstruction of a 19th Century weavers workshop.
