A commune predominately cantered around grape production with around 60% of the commune’s area given over to vines.

History

According to some sources, the name Verrières comes from the word for glass (verre).

Prior to the Revolution, Verrières was just a parish. It became a commune as a result of the law of the 19 pluvoise III (fifth month the third year of the French Republican calendar). The first entry in the public land register was dated 1810.

In 1870 Verrières had a population of 857. Today it is 412.

Heritage

The church dates from the 12th Century and has a sculpted wooded altarpiece as well as a piscina topped by a spalled dome both of which are listed artefacts. The church itself is classified as an historic monument.
